Yesterday as I went home from Work, the train stopped at Washington Park and ... stayed. After a few minutes the driver came on the intercom and told us that we were waiting for permission to proceed due to congestion.

Wondering mightily at the inscrutable ways of Tri-Met, I settled down to working on Bones' case (about a billion miles of roundy-round Cascade 220 in Sapphire Heather on a size 10 circ, soon to be subjected to the worst our washer can do, and then to suffer through my dubious efforts at zipper application) and waited for the train to move on. (While rare, there are sometimes delays in the Washington Park tunnel and there may have been an accident near the tracks further up the line, and there's not enough bus service up top to really make you want to do anything but sit tight and cozy about three hundred feet below the weather.)

About five minutes after that, four or five of Portland's Finest came up to the back area, looked around, and then went to the other side of the car. As the other dude in the elevated area and I stared after them, they went up to someone in the middle of the train and tenderly escorted him off.

A minute after that, the train went on its way.

"Congestion, huh," I said.

"I guess," said the other dude.

Happy Birthday, Circe and Chelle! Many happy returns, you old dudes. Yes, I am taking full advantage of mocking from now til February. Shit, how am I almost 31.

Twelve Days in a bit, since it's a Birthday, must think of what I want to post. Also dig out all the due library books and charge up Bones so I can slouch productively over to the library before meeting up with Jo at five at the Zoo. She has a membership so she's taking me tonight, bless her. It's not that I don't think it's worth ten dollars or whatever, it's just the thought of going to a place I've only been once or twice, in the middle of crowds of people, after dark, makes me want to cower. It was bad enough at the Rosehaven Christmas party. I was in full stand-behind-twin and possibly take hold of her shirt tail while she swore over her shoulder mode.

Dudes, what are we doing for New Years?

We had a pretty quiet Christmas all around - Mom got me some socks and the aforementioned salad spinner, and also a bizarrely useful LED light that hooks up to a USB port on your computer. It's probably one of the best things I've gotten in years. Jo got me about five ounces of some beautiful Coopwooth and bamboo roving in a really nice purple, Amy got me a really old Power Rangers figure (can't figure out which team it's from, but I think it's one of the dinosaur themes?), some Beanie Babies and yarn money, Grandma got us a tea pot with superpowers of '...', and Dawn a soup mug.

Cecil seems to really like the hat, which is a mercy.

This afternoon [info]saiyanprince and his girlfriend came over to my parents' place. We had a swim and then Aaron amused himself by playing a new card game with my brother-in-law and my dad while I showed U my cosplay costumes. She tried on several of them and for each costume we went and took a bunch of photos. They're all on my laptop at the moment but I hope to pull them off tomorrow and post a bunch! She is a lot smaller than me so a lot of the costumes were too big but she pulled them off anyway and had a great time. :3

After that we collected Chas and had a nice dinner out at Fast Eddys. I had a bunless burger with a double side of bacon and it was delicious. :3 DELICIOUS.

Today was sister's birthday so to celebrate we tripped off to see Avatar in 3D. made a so-so dinner that others liked but didn't work for me, had ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins then played Scene it! for a while, which was lots of fun. Apparently brother in law and I had the same idea to get her a frying pan, as it was something she needed, but since they're different, she's elected to keep both. He also got her the Wii Fit Plus, which she wanted, but she was wanting just the add on game, not the whole kit with the board and all.

Avatar was good, the 3D was quite stunning, especially in the smallest details, like computer displays being truly 3D. The CG was also good, the story was about as good as could be expected. On various LJs and such there's a lot of negative talk about its message of colonialism and white guilt and I was thinking about that going into it, white man going native to save the natives. Been done lots of times before, Kevin Costner did it in Dance with Wolves. It's certainly not any worse or any more pretentious than previous efforts.

But MAAAAN our signals on the starting time got crossed, it was playing at 11:30 and we thought it was 11:45 so didn't get going till 11 and had to pick up brother so ended up arriving at the theater just as the previews were starting and the upper sections were full, so we had to sit in the front. Gives you a bit of a headache after a while, being so close, and trying to keep things in focus.

Also promos for Alice in Wonderland in 3D. Which I am HMMM about. Will see about that. Not always a big Burton fan.
27th-Dec-2009 11:05 am - twelve days two: sherlock holmes
Oh God so dead yesterday. Went over to Jo's Christmas night (I am all signed up for K-con now! Apparently they plan to use my natural talents in guest liasons, cough cough) and didn't get back home til ... one? And left my wallet there, sigh.

Title: The Case of the Cheating Washerwoman
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes 2009

I figure after a while the three of them, while not exactly married to each other, have an agreement ... and by that I mean, Watson is totally unaware that he has a wife and a boyfriend who like to gang up on him )

25th-Dec-2009 11:40 am - ho ho ho and all that shit
I don't know why, but with all the JIM HAETS XMASSS fics showing up I've somehow got it stuck in my head that actually, Jim loves Christmas, in the way that lonely and scarred people sometimes do. He loves the idea of it. Man, people go and have dinner with people they like, and if they get drunk they're not mean about it! And nobody screams or has icy silences! Shit, it's liked a magical fairy tale! So Bones is always dragging him home to Georgia or whatever and Jim sits in a corner and soaks all this awesome togetherness up like a sponge. They go to church (in my head Bones is a Christmas and Easter Episcopalian and somehow someone on the ship is a LEM so they can have communion as appropriate, or else like a quarter of the ship are ordained ministers of INSERT RELIGION HERE, and that's not counting the dudes who have 'chaplain' on their job description) and sing carols and Jim just eats it up.

Spock also loves Christmas although it turns out that Amanda hadn't been one for big Christmases even before she married a Vulcan, so they used to have quiet days and string garlands to hang outside for the wildlife. Also, and Spock and Sarek like to think nobody noticed this, her husband and son spoiled the hell out of her, so even if she had wanted wild eggnog parties and a billion people over, they would have cheerfully gone along.

Bones just wants to know why and how he became the normal one in this particular relationship. Oh God, when did this become a relationship.

TWELVE DAYS, DAY ONE: MUSIC

NATURALLY YOU WILL USE THESE ONLY FOR PREVIEWING AND WILL BUY AND / OR DELETE AFTER TWENTY FOUR HOURS, RIGHT? RIGHT.

So did you know that Jars of Clay made a Christmas album last year? Neither did I. Featuring the only version of Little Drummer Boy that I've been able to listen to without screaming in rage. (Poooosssibly this is because I have an unnatural love for Jars of Clay.) Also an adorable song about staying in bed all day with the one you love best in all the world.

Jars of Clay - Christmas Songs

And shut up, you know you dance around in your underwear shaking your thang to her music too:

Lady Gaga - Christmas Tree

This is trufax - if Smash Mouth sings a song it becomes 73.823Q% more filled with Awesome. Add Rosie O'Donnell into that and it's possible the universe may actually explode.

Smash Mouth and Rosie O'Donnell - Nuttin' for Christmas

On a more serious note:

O Come O Come Emmanuel

This is one of my favorite Christmas hymns.

If you like the music, let me know!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, YOU DUDES. ♥ I'm glad of every single one of you bastards. If you don't celebrate Christmas, enjoy your day off!
24th-Dec-2009 10:05 pm(no subject)
Well, it's not Christmas yet out here on the West Coast but anyways...merry Christmas, all! I don't celebrate it on a religious level, for me and the family it's exchanging gifts, having dinner, watching movies and playing whatever games might have been received as a present.
And then when I get home, I hunt down the Doctor Who special...

Xmas Eve was just as I like it, nice and quiet. Shut down the shop at 3PM, picked up a pizza at Round Table, went home to gobble a couple slices down. Smokehouse pepperoni combo with gorgonzola cheese on top...VERY DELISH! Then a nap lol. HBO and games to play and cake to go with the pizza so it's been a nice peaceful evening. Didn't want to hang out at sister's as brother is already over there and I'll be there tomorrow so one less lurker is better. And I do cherish the quiet evenings with just me and the cat.

Time for cake and tuna for the cat! I've switched her from baby food to tuna as I've discovered the resealable packets of tuna.

Have a great day tomorrow, everyone, and for those of you in the snowy areas, drive extra careful, if you must drive!
24th-Dec-2009 09:17 pm - ive been up since like three am
and walked like four miles plus my regularly scheduled work schlepping so I'm going to fall over dead soon, but

MERRY CHRISTMAS YOU DUDES. TWELVE DAYS STARTS TOMORROW.

ps i have a terrible ambition to write a really awful slash fanfic directly after seeing sherlock holmes tomorrow. good idea? y/n

23rd-Dec-2009 01:50 pm - Hello everybody!
Hello again.

I'm mostly on Twitter nowadays, which is why I haven't been updating in a while. Let me see if I can sum up the last four months real quick: Lots of links! )

In October I got a cold and as I was getting over it, I suffered from random bouts of vertigo, which was completely the opposite of awesome. A few days ago, Sammy was diagnosed with canine vestibular disease, which is basically the worst case of vertigo ever that could last for over a month. (We are hoping it does not. She is miserable enough as it is.) I am unfortunate enough to have a very sympathetic stomach and every time I look at her eyes (which are flicking side to side, the same way your eyes would if you did that thing where you spin around and around and around and then stop suddenly), I get nauseated. :/

By the way! Dog owners! You may want to look up canine vestibular disease (also known as old dog vestibular syndrome). It is extremely scary to have happen to your dog and if I can keep one person from being scared half to death, then it will be worth it. It tends to hit older dogs and it tends to be very sudden. Sammy started staggering around and falling over, then threw up, peed on herself, then refused to eat or drink anything. Since she is a Golden Retriever, and will happily eat herself silly, we were very frightened by this.

Sammy was greeted by the entire worried pet hospital when we took her in. Everybody there loves to her absolute pieces and was very sad she was so sick. Vet diagnosed CVD. Her own dog had been affected by it a few years ago. Sammy is now on dramamine to help with her symptoms and we are helping her walk around, hand-feeding her if she has trouble eating from her food bowl, helping her get water, and helping her to the backyard when she indicates she needs to go (usually by enthusiastically falling off the couch).

The upside of CVD is that eventually the dog will adjust and not be so miserable and dizzy all the time. The downside of CVD is that this can take anywhere from three days to four weeks. Some dogs keep the head tilt permanently. (Sammy is tilting to the same side she has Horner's Syndrome on and I am given to understand they may be related.)

As far as I can tell, many species (including cats and humans and cattle and horses and etc) can be affected by vestibular disease, so if your cat starts staggering around in circles with its head tilted to one side, you may want to talk to your vet.

It may seem kind of like your pet has had a stroke, but vascular problems like that are actually incredibly rare in dogs and cats. Vestibular disease is far more likely and fortunately much less life-threatening and permanent than a stroke.

Learning that my dog is going to be okay for at least a while longer was the best present I could have gotten. I hope your holiday season is going well! ♥
23rd-Dec-2009 07:44 pm - hmm
can't get new MP3 player to pay attention to meeee and I can't get it to format from the GUI, and I'm mildly terrified of breaking something horribly if I do something wrong.

Hmm. On the other hand, it was on sale and then I had a coupon, so I'm out like, fourteen bucks. It's rather frustrating since everything else works okay but the mp3s themselves. I mean, seriously, Memorex? Seriously?

Dawn and Jo, matinees are at like, 1:10, 3:50 and 4:30 at Lloyd Center? I'd ruther meet up there because the house is still a heart breaking mess d/t both of us being cranky and also SAD people.

And I think I've said this before, but so help me god, I will write a story about Kirk and Spock's big gay love and never once shall Kirk or Spock call the other th'y'la. SO HELP ME GODDDD.
Disclaimers: Not mine, no moneys made. I just couldn't resist. Madeline, Sam, Nate, Fiona, and Michael all belong to Burn Notice; Darius, Annie Devlin, Rich, Duncan, Benny Carbassa/'Luccesi', and Hugh Fitzcairn are ll from Highlander. Beta and cheerleading by Alyss, Devo, Dragon, Merewyn, and tarsh -- mistakes mine. Sorry.
Rated: PG at most.

22nd-Dec-2009 07:02 pm - whoo
went to rosehaven christmas party, got bag for roast bird (only twelve pounds, it seems? Still, that's a hell of a lot of turkey) and am current roasting ditto. Mmm turkey liver. Best part of the holidays.

then someone at work called and asked if I could switch shifts Christmas eve and I kind of burst into hilarious laughter over the phone. Well, okay, I didn't, but like hell am I going to work Christmas eve swing shift. I have things to do. Like getting frozen pizzas and working out when and where we're going to watch Robert Downing Jr gaying up the big screen the Sherlock Holmes movie.

ON THAT NOTE:

IF YOU ARE AT ALL INTERESTED IN SHERLOCK HOLMESING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW TONIGHT OR TOMORROW. So far Jo and Dawn and I are going, but I have to get tickets for me at least, since I unno if it's going to be sold out.

Also, I found my god damn mp3 player. In a bag I turned out at least three times. HEY GREMLINS, THAT SHIT AIN'T COOL.

My friends, I am proud (?) to say that I now run an entirely Linux box. I deleted the Windows partition on Kagami -- well Linux is named Spock, so I guess he's renamed for good now? -- last night.

Of course then I had to curse and reinstall Ubuntu entirely because when I deleted the Vista partition Kagami got really confused and refused to boot, and then I had an exciting round of AIIIGH on my hands.

plus, you know, I somehow managed to get two installations of Ubuntu - the new one and the old one - but that's okay, I'll worry that out later.

I'm learning command line. I - I feel like a real nerd now! ;____;

(dudes, did someone link to Graduate Vulcan? There's six new delicious tags in less than 24 hours. yes, I stalk my delicious tags. best way of figuring out popularity I have.)
